Three examples of great screenwriting

Hustle

Written by Taylor Materne

From the opening pages, I thought it was really interesting that Materne doesn't state if these are text over black, over images, supers, etc. Just bold and center-aligned.

(Just as camera shots have faded away from scripts, perhaps we're beginning to see some other contextual markers drop as well.)

A League Of Their Own

Written by Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel

You'll never go wrong ending a script with an image of the most important relationship in the story.

The Knight’s Phoenix (Pilot)

Written by Joseph Mwamba

The whole pilot is great, but I just wanted to highlight just a simple bit of writing with the "-- chk! --" so that we feel the moment it happens. Just lovely!

Two quotes about screenwriting

Writer’s block is starting the editing process too early.
— Katie Tech
Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while working.
— Henri Matisse

One thing to think about

Do your characters have another relationship?

Frasier and his dad aren’t just father and son, they’re also roommates.

Clark and Lois aren’t just lovers, they’re also coworkers.

Raylan and Boyd aren't just enemies, they also dug coal together.

If there are opportunities to make a relationship more than one thing, it can pay dividends down the road.

Arch enemies and childhood best friends.

Spouses and coworkers.

Rivals for CEO of a giant media company and siblings.

These “additional” relationships can provide unique opportunities for characters to connect on a level that’s not the main one, and it can provide conflict when their various connections are at odds.

Do your characters have another relationship?

Have a great draft,

David Wappel
